Your toddler: 17 months oldDevelopment of your 17-month-old baby All babies grow at different rates, but as a difficult guide here are the development milestones to care for your baby at the age of 17. Don't worry if your little boy doesn't match this pattern exactly – they may be a few weeks ahead in some things and a little behind others and usually it does with time. However, if you are concerned that your child has lost one or more important milestones completely speak to your health visitor or GP. How will your 17-month-old baby sleep? Your 17-month-old is likely to continue to need about 14 hours of sleep a day, but most children leave the morning nap now if they haven't done it some time ago. At night on average you will sleep for 11-12 hours and your afternoon nap is usually 11⁄2 to 2 hours, but it won't take long before your afternoon maze is shortened a little too. Your baby and 17-month meal As usual, you're looking for three meals a day that include all major food groups plus a couple of healthy snacks and about 400 ml of milk. Remember that your child needs breast milk or milk with full fat (total), not squid or semi-squid until he is 2 years old. Young children are notorious for being fussible eaters and suddenly they can turn their noses up into things that have always wolf happily before. Experience with different textures and the visible appearance of the food, as it might be that your little one prefers your pasta sauce on the side instead of over your spaghetti so you can see some of the separate ingredients. Avoid baby plates with different sections or create a fuse every time carrots touch the broccoli on a standard plate in the future! Talk to your child while you're preparing meals and let them see what you do with the different ingredients as this might help too. Physical development for your 17-month-old baby Walking is becoming more secure and stable and your child can stop, bend to pick up something from the ground, get up again and keep walking unaided. They will also have the strength, balance and coordination to sit and mount a toy vehicle. Sensations, communication and emotions How's the conversation going? If your child has some recognizable words that they use with meaning, they will initially use them all the time using the same word for similar things. So "woman" can mean dog, cat, cow or any other four-legged animal! They will soon expand their vocabulary, however! If 'No' remains your answer to everything that offers you many options, for example 'Do you want to use the red top or the blue top today?', 'Will we have banana or peach for our snack?', 'Do you want the yellow cup or the blue?'. Options help your young child feel in control and also improve their vocabulary. We don't like to admit it, but young children are capable of aggressive behavior and violence and around now will hit, push, snatch and even bite to compete and get their own way. We are primates and this is a normal stage of development, however, if your little love bites another child in group of young children the shock, stigma and anger of the victim's parents can be real and not easy to deal with! However, your child is not trying to hurt, and aggression at this age is not premeditated, they simply focus on getting the toy and have found a way it works. Over time you will learn of what is and is not acceptable social behavior; in the meantime, you need to smoothly handle situations for them because you will not be able to understand the concept of sharing until it is approximately 21⁄2. Right now the best thing you can do is say something like "No, biting the wounds," distracting them and removing them from the situation and apologizing to the afflicted father. Punishments like the naughty step or taking them home are useless at this age because your child cannot associate that with what they did and will not be able to understand until they are at least 21⁄2 to 3 years old. 17-Month-Old ChildUm, was it a human sound? You might be asking yourself that these days if you are one of those (not so lucky) parents who have a screamer in the house. Many young children want to express themselves (high voice) and experiment with different levels of tone and volume. This behavior is temporary, but it can help decrease the decibels with some tactics of choice (e.g. challenging your yeller to a whispering contest or encouraging your little one to sing instead of shriek). And speaking of vocalizing, the possibilities are that your chatterbox can make a couple of words together or even speak intelligibly about half the time. Some typical behaviors these days: throw everything and everything you can shake and open the fridge a million times a day, both examples of showing a new skill. He could also have figured out how to start his diaper (you know, the new one he put two minutes ago!). With so much learning that happens so quickly, don't be surprised if the attachment of your little child to your comfort object (I need my monkey!) or your thumb is released in high gear. Covering a pillow or sucking a thumb is the way a small child blows the steam, although some children comfort in other ways (more disconcerting), as with or .
