NEWSSPORTSLOCALCULTURECOMMUTINGFOOD + STATEOBITSCOUPONS DRINKTRAVELREAL How to make a Bonsai tree of oak Related items The Japanese immigrants brought the art of bonsai to California in the early twentieth century, but it was not widely practiced until after World War II. The oak is not traditionally used for bonsai in Japan, but its use began in California in the 1950s. The large trunks and small oak leaves create attractive miniatures of old and large trees. The cork oak (quercus suber) is popular for bonsai. However, thick branches are easily broken, and the tree is sensitive to the root pruning. The easiest native oak to start on the west coast is the live oak of the coast (Quercus agrifolia) that will survive in the plant resistance zones of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. 8-11. Establishment of a live oak tree from the coastChoose a well-established wild tree or nurse from January to April that is between 6 inches to 2 feet tall. The main leader must be soft enough to bend without breaking. Mix the perlite and turba moss in a 1-a-1 ratio to create a standard bonsai culture medium. Replace the tree in a 1 gallon container with the standard bonsai medium. Strong fights buds from the top level of the tree with secateurs, which are small pears, or with small scissors, leaving in place fragile shoots. This will begin to form and balance the tree in the form of a miniature, fostering thick growth at the bottom and thin growth at the top. Clip almost all the leaves of the tree with small scissors, leaving several leaves only at the end of each branch and leader to encourage the tree to sprout near the trunk. Cut aluminum wire one third more than the length of the branch or leader that will be wrapped around. The thickness of the wire should be between a third and a half of the thickness of the trunk or branch. Wrap aluminum wire around the branches and main leader in coils of 45 degrees, leaving 1/4 inches of space between each coil. Fold the tree to the way you want, taking care not to divide the bark, so the branches or the new shoots are on the outside of a curve. Place the tree in partial shade and water regularly. The soil should remain wet, but should not be frozen during the winter. Fertilize the tree according to the manufacturer's instructions from a month after repotting and throughout the crop season. Try the branches after the tree has entered its sleeping stage at the end of the fall. Cut the end nodes of a branch to encourage to sprout closer to the trunk, keeping more nodes in the lower branches and only one or two in the upper branches. Second year of formation gently remove the bonsai tree from your pot through the trunk and expose the roots just before the new crop season begins. Cut the root mass by a third using scissors or scissors. Deposit tree in the middle of standard bonsai cultivation using the same pot or transfer the tree in a more decorative bonsai container. The width of the decorative container must be two thirds of the height of the tree. Fold the branches or main leader closer to the desired final form, adding wire to new growth as needed. Summarize fertilizing a month after root pruning according to the manufacturer's instructions. Try a new growth during the growing season to keep the tree down 2 feet tall and keep the desired shape of your tree. Yamadori English Roble Bonsai Material Yamadori English Roble Bonsai Material Quercus robur Everyone seems to want one of these in his collection. There is a certain romantic image attached to the English oak. It's a good tree to grow like bonsai. It is tolerant of most conditions but likes the full sun when it is on the leaf. Don't place too often again and once the tree develops some branching the leaves will reduce very well. Winter wash in February with a wash of jars or diluted lime sulfur to avoid pest problems in summer. Collected in Italy and now growing very well after several years. Graham bare dragged this oak last year and is now growing like a grass. This oak has a great potential with its amazing twisted trunk. This variety of Italy has an excellent definition of the form of leaf, more consistent than the cousins cultivated in the north. The tree has an excellent bark quality with an excellent movement of the trunk. Time and a little patience will see this tree develop into an exceptional and unique bonsai tree.
